Biodex NxStep™ Unweighing System
Early rehabilitation, BWSTT or over ground…

A simple, cost-effective way to reduce a patient’s weight during rehabilitation. The Biodex Unweighing System enables partial weight-bearing therapy with open access to the patient. Unique to Biodex’s design, the Unweighing System allows the necessary movements to replicate natural ambulation.
The only mobile unweighing system that provides quantifiable, dynamic, partial weight-bearing therapy without electric motor, weights or air compressors.
The dynamic, single-point suspension of the Unweighing System accommodates pelvic rotation and vertical displacement. This encouragement of proper mechanics allows functional gait patterns to be practised. When used in combination with the Biodex Gait Trainer, a comprehensive gait training environment complete with audio and visual biofeedback, is possible. Offloading a percentage of body weight enables the opportunity for early rehabilitation while providing a safe environment for patient and therapist.
Real goals are monitored and progress reported. Objective documentation, with comparison to age- and gender-based normative data, helps prove need and document outcomes.

Partial Weight-bearing Therapy
Biodex Unweighing Systems enables partial weight-bearing therapy to be conducted with the assurance of patient comfort and safety, and with convenient access to the patient for manual assistance and observation. Unlike simple patient lift devices, Biodex Unweighing Systems incorporate a dynamic suspension system that accommodates the vertical displacement of the centre of gravity that occurs during normal gait, Biodex’s patented off-loading mechanism maintains constant force. Simply dial the amount to off load. When walking, an individual’s centre of gravity typically moves through a vertical range from one to four inches (2.5 to 10cm), depending on the speed. The Biodex System accommodates up to four inches of vertical displacement while maintaining a consistent level of unweighing. Another component of normal gait is pelvic rotation. Two-point suspension systems have a tendency to restrict rotation on the horizontal plane. They respond to pelvic rotation similar to the way a playground swing undulates back to neutral after being twisted. The single-point suspension of the Biodex system allow unrestricted pelvic rotation. Should pelvic stabilisation be desired cords are attached to the support vest and adjusted for specific degrees of stabilisation.

Unweighing Harness
The Biodex Unweighing Harness is designed to provide vertical lift through three shared points of pressure: through the hip straps, gluteal fold straps and the lumbar-thoracic harness. The design improves comfort and prevents slippage without limiting lower extremity range of motion. Assuring that the patient is comfortable is essential when lengthy exercise sessions are required.
Patient weight capacity of harness is 450 lb (204 kg)

Gait Training
Gait Kinematics
Biodex Unweighing System allows full and partial weight bearing without compromising proper gait kinematics. Depending on walking speed, up to four inches of vertical displacement is permitted while the system maintains a consistent level of unweighing. When pelvic stabilisation is necessary, retention cords are provided that can be adjusted for degree.
The ability to allow pelvic rotation has its own advantages. Unlike two-point suspension systems that have a tendency to restrict rotation on a horizontal plane, the single-point method of the Unweighing System permits functional pelvic rotation and versatility when walking, side-stepping, retro-walking and turning. Patients can engage in reactive postural control exercises or change direction without repositioning the entire support system.
The unique, forward corner-mounted design of the Unweighing System enables many advantages. Therapists can view patients from all angles; patients have full visibility of treadmill display and, the open design allows natural arm swing, an essential component to encourage neuroplasticity.
